Icelandic Sheep
We raise these sheep for meat, and for their wool. We graze them on a rotation, moving fences daily around our property for the tremendous benefit they offer to our soil. We've had some spunky ewes and feisty rams, and we always stay busy during lambing season, but its worth it for the enrichment of our farm as a whole.
Chickens
In the same way as our sheep, the chickens here are friends to our soil. We move their chickshaws around every few days to encourage foraging in new places, and we benefit from what they leave behind. This picture shows our chickens in the zinnia field, taking care of a nasty grasshopper problem. Outside of our egg layers, we also raise a batch of meat birds each year to feed our family and friends.
Guard Dogs
Any time a chicken breaks into the garden, or a baby chick gets loose from the coop, our natural-born herder, Pepper, is on the job. Here she is guarding the sheep, making sure they stay on the right side of the fence. Locket, our red heeler, loves to ride along for farm chores and Junior the Great Pyrenees can usually be found sleeping in the shade on hot days.
Cows
We currently have two Jersey cows, Booya and Kachow, and three Highland cows, Fiona, Shania, and Pecan.
